Natural History Museum

The Funchal Municipal Museum (Natural History) was created by Funchal City Hall in 1929, and for this purpose the City Hall has acquired the “Palácio de S. Pedro”, one of the noblest and beautiful buildings existing in the city from the end of the XVII century.

Initially created as a Regional Museum, it contemplated not only the Natural History but also Ethnography and Archaeology. However, and along its existence it has specialized even and even more in Natural History, being at this moment its only scope.

With the immeasurable contribution of Günter E. Maul, eminent German taxidermist and scientist, who lived in Funchal from 1930 to 1997, the Museum has increased its collection of mounted animals and other biologic and geologic specimens, distributed along 6 rooms.

The Funchal Municipal Museum is an institution intending, in its essence, to show the visitor, in a simple way, knowledge in fauna, flora and geology of Madeira Archipelago, in its varied representative forms, through a permanent exhibition of mounted species and a sea water Aquarium.

This Museum has its own research activities and provides the national and international scientific community with the essential means for the progress and scientific study of the Madeira Archipelago Natural History in particular and of the Macaronesia in general.
