Marine Biology Station

The Marine Biology Station constitutes the most recent research infra-structure in the Island. It has been officially inaugurated on February 28, 1999, and it is designated to develop the sciences and technologies of the sea, specially in the areas of biology, ecology of the coast and the deep sea waters.

The Marine Biology team of the Funchal Municipal Museum (Natural History), under the Science Department of the City Hall and the Marine Biology and Oceanography Laboratory of the Biology department of The Madeira University, are part of the Marine Biology Station.

The members of these two teams participate in several research programs, from the study of hydrothermal phenomena’s of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge until the biological migration of the sea turtles.

The Funchal Marine Biology Station benefits from the contacts which the Natural History Museum of Funchal has created along its existence and has been already accepted as an observer member of the European Network of Marine Biologic Stations MARS), which has around 60 labs in Europe. The Station through its connection with the Museum and to the University of Madeira is part of the IMAR – Institute of the Sea, institute which has as its members the greatest part of the Portuguese research labs dealing with the Sciences of the Sea.

The station is located in a building of six floors by the promenade between Lido and Clube Naval and has at its disposal several dry and wet labs, refrigeration and freezing cameras, a space reserved to the maintenance of collections and studies of reference, data processing and maintenance sections.

It has also a Documentation Centre and Information called “Professor Luiz Saldanha”, a prestigious Portuguese oceanographer who was the founder of the Guia Marine Lab in Lisbon. In order to encourage the cooperation and exchange of information among investigators, this station has lodging available for 8 scientist visitors and lab space for them.
