Common name: Bigleaf hydrangea.

Scientific name: Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser.

Family: Hydrangeaceae

Distribution and Habitat: Originally from Japan, it is largely cultivated in Madeira and less in Porto Santo.

Description: This shrub may reach 4 m of height and has wide green leaves, from eliptic to ovate, with about 18 cm in length. The globular blossoms are composed of small, 4 petals flowers. The predominant colours are blue and white, but it may also present other shades, like pink or purple.
