Distribution and Habitat: Forest tree introduced in Madeira, which is today adapted and occupies more than 12.000 hectares of its territory. It also exists in the Porto Santo Island where it is cultivated.

Description: This large tree may reach 30 to 40 m in height. The trunk's bark is thick, reddish brown and very cracked. The leaves are dark green, paired needles with 10 to 25 cm. They are stiff and thick. The male flowers are arranged in golden blossoms, spike-shaped, and laterally gathered in the branches, while the female flowers are arranged in ending blossoms. The pinecones are ovoid cones, symmetrical or almost symmetrical, light brown and polished.
