Distribution and Habitat: This endemic species of Macronesia is one of the main components of the Laurissilva, abundant in high regions of Madeira (above 600 m). Some examples of this species may be seen in Ribeira da Janela and Folhadal, located between Encumeada and Feiteiras in São Vicente.

Description: This tree or shrub may reach a height of 8 m. Its bark is brown or greyish, with dull green leaves and several aromatic white flowers.

Conservation statute and Threats: Extremely abundant species, under the statutes ascribed to the Laurissilva forest.

Observations: Its leafage is commonly used for feeding cattle. Blooming season is from August to October.
