Common name: Trocaz Pigeon.

Scientific name: Columba trocaz (Heineken, 1829)

Family: Columbidae

Distribution and Habitat: Endemic species from the Madeira Island. It lives associated to the Laurissilva forest, demonstrating a preference for areas abundant in Til, whose berries it feeds on.

Description: It has a bluish grey plumage, wine-coloured shade in the chest and a white stripe that goes through the tail.

Conservation statute and Threats: It is a vulnerable species because it has a very limited area of occurrence. The Laurissilva forest, where this species inhabits, is considered Humanity Natural World Heritage by UNESCO, thus the problem of loss and degradation of the habitat is no longer a threat.

Observations: Resulting from an effort of conservation of the Laurissilva forest and from the end of this species hunting, the population has stabilized, and is now very common in some places.
