Distribution and Habitat: Macronesian endemic subspecies. It occurs in the Madeira Archipelago and it may be seen in forest, indigenous and exotic areas, low growing vegetation areas, cultivation areas, cliffs or in the peripheries of urban centers.

Description: It is the smallest bird of prey in the region. It has the ability to hover for long periods of time. Conservation statute and Threats: Species of minor concern since its population in the archipelago is composed of about 10000 individuals and it has a wide area of occurrence.

Observations: This species has demonstrated remarkable population growth during the last decades, and has also become an urban bird.
