Scientific name: Buteo buteo harterti (Swan, 1919)

Distribution and Habitat: Endemic subspecies of the Madeira Archipelago. It occurs in forest areas, in areas with less forest or with low growing vegetation and in agricultural or suburban areas.

Description: This is the largest bird of prey in the region. It has rounded wings and yellow feet. It is often seen flying in wide circles, taking advantage of the ascending warm air currents.

Conservation statute and Threats: Species of minor concern since its population in the archipelago is composed of about 10.000 individuals and it has a wide area of occurrence and distribution.

Observations: This species is notably expanding and its presence in low altitude zones has increased.
