Common name: Atlantic Blue Marlin.

Scientific name: Makaira nigricans Lacepède, 1801

Distribution and Habitat: Pelagic species that occurs in up to 800 m depth.

Description: Its rostrum is very elongated and sword-shaped. Its back has a very dark blue colouration and its belly is silver white. It reaches up to 4,5 m in length and weighs 650 Kg.

Conservation statute and Threats: This species is protected by Annex I of the 1982 Convention on The Law of the Sea (U.N.).

Observations: It the last 5 years, the number of sport fishing fans has increased significantly due to the fact that the region is internationally acclaimed for being a location where some of the biggest Atlantic blue marlins are abundant.
