Common name: Band-rumped Storm-Petrel.

Scientific name: Oceanodroma castro (Harcourt, 1851)

Family: Hydrobatidae

Distribution and Habitat: Pelagic species that occurs in the Madeira Archipelago and nests in the small islands, islets and coastal cliffs. It may be seen many miles off the coast, usually feeding on fishing boats.

Description: Small bird with a dark colouration, white stripe on the uropygium and slightly forked tail.

Conservation statute: Species of minor concern. Population of over 10.000 individuals and a vast area of concentration.

Observations: This species nests all year, presenting two populations with different nesting peaks, in the spring and in the winter.
