Common name: Atlantic Cory's shearwater.

Scientific name: Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881)

Distribution and Habitat: Pelagic bird that occurs in the Madeira Archipelago and nests in the small islands, islets and coastal cliffs. In the Selvagens Islands (one of the first protected areas of Portugal), it nests on the ground, among the ground vegetation, for lack of disturbances in that area.

Description: Large marine bird. The wing size varies between 100 and 125cm. Female average weight is 780g, males are bigger and weight approx. 900g. It may be identifiable through its rapid and glided flight.

Conservation statute and Threats: Species of minor concern. Population superior to 10.000 couples with a wide area of occurrence.

Observations: Among the marine nesting birds of the Madeira Archipelago, the Atlantic Cory's shearwater is the one most studied. The biggest colony of this species is located in the Selvagens Islands.
