Common name: Feas's Petrel.
Scientific name: Pterodroma feae (Mathews, 1934)
Family: Procelariidae
Distribution and Habitat: Macronesian endemic species, yet it nests exclusively in the Madeira Archipelago, more precisely in Bugio (Desertas Islands) and in Cape Vert. It is a pelagic marine bird that digs its nest in the ground.
Description: Very similar to the Zinos Petrel, with dark upperparts, white underparts and a dark interior of the wing.
Conservation statute and Threats: This species is considered vulnerable because it has a small population and because its area of concentration is very limited. It is naturally protected by the extremely difficult accessibility presented by Bugio.
Observations: Rabbits are very abundant in Bugio and have caused some disturbances in the laying of these birds eggs. Since Bugio is the only place in the archipelago where these birds nest, some rabbit eradication and control projects are being analysed.
