Common name: Barred hogfish.

Scientific name: Bodianus scrofa (Valenciennes, 1839)

Family: Labridae

Distribution and Habitat: It lives in the coast, in rocky bottom areas up to 50 m depth.

Description: Oval body laterally compressed and covered with large scales. Its mouth has fleshy lips and a row of strong canine-like teeth projecting forwards. In general, males have a reddish body with a bluish green shade. Females usually have an orange red back with a yellow stripe on the sides. In both genders there is a dark blue spot on the first three rays of the dorsal fin. They measure up to 65 cm.

Conservation statute and Threats: Not evaluated.

Observations: Species with commercial value, caught with a longline. It presents sexual dimorphism, the male being much more colourful than the female.
