The wish to provide Madeira with a botanical garden goes back to the XVII century, and it became real only in 1960.
The
Madeira Botanical Garden is 3 Km far from the city of Funchal, on the
south coast of a valley with exceptional conditions for the creation
and maintenance of an exuberant shrubbery.
In its gardened
areas, situated 35.000m2 above sea level, more than 2000 exotic plants,
from all continents, are preserved as in its original environment. Due
to the worldwide decrease of biodiversity and habitats, this garden has
become a pole for science and culture, with the objective of preserving
plants in danger of extinction.
The garden is open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
