Scientific name: Erica scoparia L. subsp. maderinicola D.C. McClint.

Family: Ericaceae

Distribution and Habitat: This endemic subspecies of Madeira may be found from the coastline to great altitudes (1400 m). It may also inhabit the highest peaks of Porto Santo, although less frequently.

Description: This shrub or small tree reaches 4 m in height and it has many branches, small linear leaves and rosy flowers.

Conservation statute and Threats: Very abundant species, not threatened.

Observations: It plays a fundamental role in the fogs fixation, provoking its condensation and later infiltration and water storage in the phreatic water. As its own name suggests, Besom Heath, it is used in the fabrication of brooms. Blooming season is from April to June.
