Distribution and Habitat: Macronesia endemic subspecies. It occurs in the Laurissilva, above 1000 m. It may be seen in Santana, Porto da Cruz and Tabúa, in the Sítio do Barbusano.
Description: It reaches a height of 25 m. It has a dense and rounded top, dark green leaves with rolled edges and, generally, garnished with galls that originate from a specific insect. The fruit is a green berry that becomes black when ripe.
Conservation statute and Threats: Abundant species, under the statutes ascribed to the Laurissilva forest.
