Distribution and Habitat: It occurs in the Madeira Archipelago where it nests in deep valleys, usually with vegetation.
Description: Its average size is 80cm and it weighs approximately 345g at adult age. Its main features are almost completely white underparts, very dark upperparts and a black head, except for the throat and the parts below the eyes. At sea it is very uninhibited, occasionally following boats.
Conservation statute and Threats: Vulnerable species because it can only be found in limited areas. The largest best-known colony is situated in the Santa Luzias riverbanks, found in Funchals Ecological Park and where efforts are being made to control some predators, namely mice and cats.
Observations: This species nests exclusively in the Madeira Island between February and August and occurs in the riverside valleys up to its origin, between 400m and 700m altitude.
