Common name: Spectacled Warbler.

Scientific name: Sylvia conspicillata orbitalis (Wahlberg, 1854)

Family: Sylviidae

Distribution and Habitat: Macronesian endemic subspecies. It occurs in the Madeira Archipelago in the Porto Santo and Madeira islands. It may be seen in rarely disturbed and very dense shrubby (heath and brooms) areas. In Porto Santo it also occurs in areas of new pinewood.

Description: It is a very small bird, with a grey head and white throat. It presents sexual dimorphism. The females plumage is more dull and brownish than the males.

Conservation statute and Threats: Vulnerable bird. The population is composed a small number of individuals (less than 1.000) and its area of occurrence is limited.

Observations: This species is very difficult to observe, so its biology and population dynamics is not very well known.
