Walking is the best option for those who wish to experience Madeira Island's nature and to discover its astonishing landscapes.

From the wild interior areas of the island, to its coastal agricultural fields, there's always a path or a Levada worth walking.

The "Levadas" are primitive irrigation channels, that cross a total of 1500 km, through valleys and mountains, and allow the penetration into the interior of the island. The "Levadas" are part of a group of protected areas, from which we can highlight the Natural Park of Madeira and the Ecological Park of Funchal. Along this water courses, we can find quite rare fauna and flora species belonging to the Laurissilva Forest of Madeira, a reliquary forest, distinguished as Mankind Patrimony.

We can observe birds like the Trocaz Pigeon (Columba Trocaz), the Zinos Petrel (Pterodroma Madeira), the Chaffinch (Fringila coelebs maderensis) and the Madeira Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus maderensis) and trees like the Madeira Laurel (Ocotea foetens), the Bay Tree (Laurus azorica) and the Madeira Mahogany (Persea indica), besides many other bushes, plants and mosses that are uniques in the world.
