Lagoa do Vento

This path takes as its starting point the largest plateau existing in Madeira: The Paul da Serra. When arriving to the top of the plateau, do not forget to climb until the surveillance station against fires, located in the peak over the charge camera of the Hydroelectric Central of Calheta. Here you can view the waters that flow to the north and south seas, the Lombadas of Calheta and the valley of Ribeira da Janela. It is a unique landscape! After viewing this rare natural beauty, descend until the house of Rabaçal and find the sign to the Lagoa do Vento. There you will find a narrow and difficult path which will lead you for about 40 to 60 minutes (2 Km) until the Lagoa do Vento. Believe us, it is worth while, the lagoon is magnificently carved in the middle of the cliff and, when the atmosphere conditions are favourable, we can watch a rainbow, for the wonder of our eyes. To come back we take the same trail until the shelter of Rabaçal.

Risco

One kilometre is what you have to walk between the shelter of Rabaçal and the little balcony of the Risco, on a flat path that, on foot, takes about 15 minutes. Once at the balcony, you will find an astonishing landscape embellished by the Poço do Risco, built by the nature and where flow the waters of the Lagoa do Risco.

25 Fontes (25 fountains)

Coming back from the Risco, a little before the shelter of Rabaçal, you will find a sign indicating the path towards the 25 Fontes. Descend by the path at your right until you find a Levada. You have to walk in the contrary-direction of the Levada's water, in a course which will take approximately one hour. You will find a small lagoon, surrounded by thick vegetation, where the water flows from several fountains. You are at 25 Fontes. The route to reach here, in spite of not being difficult, is not advisable to people that suffer from vertigo, as in some parts of the path the levada is very narrow and unprotected. Also you should not walk back after dark. If you do not want to return by the same course you may cross the tunnel with about 800 m - it is necessary a lantern - and walk the route linking Calheta to Paul da Serra.
