Bird Watching is an activity which has more than 80 million adepts over the world. In the last years, this activity has developed greatly in Madeira, due to the excellent conditions for its practice.
In Madeira Archipelago it is possible to find 43 species of nest birds, being 21% endemic species and sub-species and 33% from Macaronesia.
Due to the variety and specificity of the existing ecosystems in Madeira, there quite emblematic species, such as: the Trocaz Pigeon (Columba Trocaz), the Madeira Firecrest (Regulus madeirensis) and the Zinos Petrel (Pterodroma Madeira), which is the bird specie more threatened in the world, besides other endemic species from the Madeira Archipelago and from Macaronesia.
Besides the great variety of land birds, there are also a great diversity of sea birds. Normally it is this kind of birds that calls the attention of the birdwatchers. In this Archipelago we can find several colonies of worldwide interest, where we can highlight the Puffinus assimilis baroli, the Pelagodroma marina Hypoleuca, the Puffinus puffinus puffinus, the Oceanodroma castro and the Atlantic Cory's shearwater (Calonectris diomedia borealis).
